We are living in a time of ecological and humanitarian crisis that requires imminent action from a broad range of disciplinary fields, that need to come together in a joint effort to contribute to creating a better planet. In this talk, I will argue the UX also needs to rethink some of its basic foundations and move towards a stronger environmental and social engagement with the world and its surroundings. I will present three end-of-world frames that need imminent action – the end of nature, the end of culture and the end of the human – and give concrete examples of how the design of digital and interactive technologies might be explored to create better conditions for living. This will lead me to propose a new direction within UX, namely that of Planetary UX, with all the dilemmas it entails.
